DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
The Department of Geography, Malda College, Malda started its journey in the year 1995 with 2 years Geography (Pass Course) affiliated to the University of North Bengal. In the subsequent year, the University of North Bengal expressed satisfaction on running of Geography (Pass Course) and obliged Malda College to introduce 3 years honours course in Geography. Thanks to the leadership of the then Principal J. N. Bagchi, contribution of Governing Body, Malda College and the students as well as their guardians who reposed faith in the capabilities of the Department of Geography as well as Malda College. The contribution made by the three esteem teachers of Malda Women’s College who took all pain to run the course at the initial stage in spite of having their busy schedule. Since 2007 courses are affiliated to the University of Gour Banga as the college comes under the jurisdictional area of the University of Gour Banga, Malda.
In the year 1999 a full-time teacher joined the department that smoothened the running of every affair of the department. Presently with 22 students of honours course and 50 students of general course for each year along with faculty members (eight) and two support staffs, the department boasts of gaining the status of a leading department in the Madhya Banga as well as North Bengal. The department has very high reputation in every sphere of the field of geography. A number of alumni of this department have become luminaries in their respective fields of teaching and researches.
The department has left indelible mark among the geographers’ community with their works. Be it the employment rate, success in competitions such a mock parliament, debate or model show, our students always hold a very respectable position. Performance of our students is sometimes a cause of jealousness for neighbouring colleges as our students holds very god ranks in the UG examinations as well as PG examinations in the affiliating universities. So much so that in the present affiliating university our students occupied all of first five ranks.
So far employment rate of our alumni is concerned, the department is highly satisfied on their performance as 99 per cent of them got well respected job within three years (two years more to complete PG and one year for B. Ed) of completion of U G course. The held good ranks in SSC and CSC list. Though majority of them are in the education sector, a few of them are also in administrative jobs.
The department rightly boasts to house well spacious and well equipped laboratories required for U.G. level. Students feel comfortable while working in the laboratories as they get sufficient equipments and instruments for their works. Field works are carried out on yearly basis in geographically important places to train them carrying out survey and handling of instruments in the field.
We have an arrangement of Remedial Course funded by UGC for the backward classes (SC, ST) and minority students. Generally the members of faculty try to give best quality of education through divide them in to different groups. Not only cultural programme, Department also conducts academic seminar to enrich the academic environment. Once a year we successfully participate in the Annual Model Exhibition of our college.
